The Mexico Design Files: A Masterclass in Colour, Kitsch, and Modernism
Last month I was lucky enough to take the trip of a life time to Mexico, and my camera roll is currently bursting. So I'm going to share a massive photo dump with you! From the modernist icons and colourful kitsch of Mexico City to dopamine-inducing Oaxaca, to the raw, sculptural brutalism of the coast, it was a total feast for the eyes (and stomach - Mexico has firmly taken first place for our favourite foodie destination 🌮)
I wanted to share a few of the stand-out moments that are currently fueling my mood boards, and a big hint for what's coming up in our spring/summer collection.
Colour & Whimsy
The first thing that hits you in Mexico is how everyone just leans into colour and kitsch without a second thought. There’s zero hesitation when it comes to decoration.
As you know, we love a bit of whimsy here at Weirdstock, and Mexico is full of it. Add more fruit to your drinks! Put a cute dress on your pooch! Paint your house pink and yellow! There's no playing it safe.
Swipe for the cutest kitsch and colourful things that caught my eye.
Casa Azul (The Frida Kahlo Museum), Coyoacán
You can’t talk about Mexican colour without mentioning Casa Azul. This living breathing museum shows how a home can be a total extension of yourelf. Every corner is layered with folk art, traditional pottery, and personal treasures. It’s a reminder that decorating isn't about following a set of rules, but about surrounding yourself with the things that tell your story.
Roberto Eibenschutz House, Mexico City
Getting a rare look inside Roberto Eibenschutz’s iconic 1960s home was very special. It’s the perfect intersection of space age shapes and organic modernism. The coloured concrete floors and stained glass are amazing! (Click here for a video tour around this amazing.)
Biblioteca Vasconcelos, Mexico City
esigned by Alberto Kalach, the Biblioteca Vasconcelos is a brutalist masterpiece. The bookshelves are suspended in mid-air, making them look weightless within a massive concrete and glass shell.
Lagunilla Antiques Market, Mexico City
Sunday morning at Lagunilla is a sacred ritual for any treasure hunter in Mexico City. My camera roll from this day is 90% kitsch and I’m not mad about it.
You can find everything from 70s executive modernism traditional folk art.
Design Favourites
I was constantly snapping beautiful things throughout my trip. There were so many design moments that caught my eye, from metro seats to paving stones, to coffee shop decor, brutalist architecture and modernist icons.
Casato, Puerto Escondido
We ended our trip on the Oaxacan coast in Puerto Escondido. We didn't stay at Casato, but I had to visit and see this brutalist gem for myself. We had a lovely breakfast here!
I’ve come back feeling so inspired to bring this mix of retro soul and architectural energy into our new designs. Mexico is a reminder that houses should be fun, they should be bold, and they should never, ever be boring!
Stay tuned - the spring/summer collection are going to be a celebration of everything I've seen. Coming this May!
